Old Rain (Fool)

about

This is one from the vaults! Composed, performed and recorded in 1993. This piece was originally titled "Old Rain", and was recorded in two tracks; the first track is the minimalism-inspired repeated pattern of alternating chords, and the second track is the wispy anti-melody in the upper keys. Both were played live, recorded into a 4-track cassette recorder, hooked up to a Kawai digital piano.

Shortly after its completion, I gave a copy to Jackie Latendresse of the Free Flow Dance Company, along with a half-dozen other bits of music I had been making. Free Flow used "Old Rain" in a choreography titled "Fool". For most of this piece's existence, it was known by and published in my catalog under that new name.

Though I had saved my sheet-music transcription of it, I lost my copy of the recording long ago. Thankfully, in 2012 Jackie still had hers, and was able to digitize the audio from her original cassette. Time is never kind to magentic recordings; the cassette had accumulated a lot of very loud tape-hiss. This is a gently remastered version, sacrificing some of the high frequencies to remove as much as possible.
